Fragrance Families Decoded: From Aromatic to Oriental
The fragrance wheel — a classification system that groups fragrances by their dominant character — is the most useful tool for discovering fragrances aligned with your taste. Understanding the major families and their relationships allows you to navigate any fragrance collection intelligently.
Fresh Fragrances
Fresh fragrances are built around clean, light, and energising accords. The subfamilies include: Citrus (bergamot, lemon, grapefruit-led compositions); Aquatic (marine and watery accords, pioneered by Creed's Virgin Island Water and L'Eau d'Issey); Green (cut grass, herbs, and plant materials); and Fruity (though these often overlap with floral).
Floral Fragrances
The world's largest commercial fragrance category. Subfamilies include: Floral Bouquet (multiple flowers combined); Single Floral (one dominant flower — rose, jasmine, tuberose); Soft Floral (flowers with powdery, musk elements); and Floral Oriental (flowers warmed by oriental base notes).
Oriental Fragrances
Rich, warm, and sensual. Subfamilies: Soft Oriental (light amber and florals); Oriental (amber, resin, and spice); Woody Oriental (oud, vetiver, and sandalwood-led). These are the longest-lasting and most intense fragrance families.
Woody Fragrances
Sophisticated and versatile. Subfamilies: Woods (sandalwood, cedar, vetiver); Mossy Woods (the chypre family — labdanum over moss); and Dry Woods (smoke, leather, and dry wood accords).
Using the Wheel
Adjacent families on the wheel are complementary and will likely appeal if you enjoy either adjacent category. Opposite families will feel dramatically different. Using this map, you can predict with reasonable accuracy whether a new fragrance family will appeal to you based on what you already love.
