In Short
Black Opium, Libre, Y and Myslf assessed alongside the vintage powerhouses — Kouros, Opium, Paris. Which size of Le Parfum is actually better value, and who Kouros is genuinely for.
Yves Saint Laurent Guide 2026: Black Opium, Libre, Y & Kouros
Yves Saint Laurent has the strongest back catalogue of any designer house we carry and two of the most commercially dominant modern fragrances in Black Opium and Libre. It also has Kouros — a 1981 release that remains one of the most divisive masculines ever made, and one of the best value bottles in this store.
Here's how the 31 bottles we stock break down.
The House's Current Standing
YSL Beauté sits under L'Oréal. The catalogue splits cleanly into two eras that smell nothing alike: the vintage powerhouses — Opium, Kouros, Paris, Cinema — and the modern franchise pillars — Black Opium, Libre, Y, Myslf.
YSL sits at a higher price point than most designer houses here. Nothing in the current range is under $110, so concentration and size decisions matter. Start with our guide to fragrance concentrations.
Tier 1: The Modern Pillars
Black Opium Eau de Parfum at $117.68 for 1.7oz is the house's defining modern feminine — coffee, vanilla and white flowers over a dark base. It essentially created the coffee-gourmand category and remains the reference point for it.
Black Opium Le Parfum is the intensified version, and here the size maths matter: $140.88 for 1.7oz against $198.56 for 3oz. That's roughly $83 per ounce versus $66 per ounce — the larger bottle is meaningfully better value if you know it suits you.
Libre Eau de Parfum at $112.20 for 1.6oz is the other modern pillar — lavender and orange blossom with a vanilla base, and the house's answer to a more contemporary femininity. Libre Intense at $136.19 for 1.6oz is the deeper version.
Y Eau de Parfum at $189.58 for 3.3oz is the flagship modern masculine — sage, bergamot and geranium over amberwood. Clean, sharp and expensive.
Myslf at $140.65 for 3.4oz refillable is the newest major masculine, and notably it ships in a refillable bottle — the same value logic as Armani applies if refills are stocked.
Tier 2: The Vintage Powerhouses — Where the Value Is
Kouros at $115.74 and $119.09 depending on size is the most interesting bottle in this catalogue. A 1981 animalic-aromatic that is genuinely polarising — people either consider it a masterpiece or find it unwearable. There is very little middle ground.
If you have only worn modern fresh masculines, Kouros will be a shock. That is precisely why it's worth trying — it's an education in what fragrance was before everything converged on clean. See our most polarising fragrances piece for context.
Opium at $148.57 for 3.3oz is the other landmark — a dense oriental that defined the category for a generation.
Paris at $174.17 is one of the great rose fragrances, and Cinema at $147.94 for 2.7oz is a softer, more modern feminine from the same era.
L'Homme at $135.24 for 3.4oz sits between the eras — clean, versatile, the most conventionally office-appropriate masculine in the range and a solid pick for professional settings.
Tier 3: Mon Paris
Mon Paris at $144.42 for 3.04oz and Mon Paris Intensement at $156.26 for 3oz are the fruity-floral direction — more overtly commercial than Libre, less distinctive than either Opium.
Where YSL Genuinely Wins
Range. Very few houses let you buy a 1981 animalic powerhouse and a 2024 refillable clean masculine from the same catalogue. If you want to understand how designer fragrance actually evolved, YSL is the single best house to study — covered further in the history of men's fragrance and the history of women's fragrance.
Black Opium and Libre also perform consistently among the most complimented women's fragrances in Los Angeles.
Being Honest About Price
Nothing here is cheap. If your budget is under $100, the Arabian side of this catalogue delivers more fragrance for the money — see our Ajmal guide or best Arabian fragrances.
What you get for YSL prices is genuine composition quality and, in the vintage line, fragrances with no real modern equivalent. Whether that's worth $115 to $200 depends on how much you care about that distinction.
For Los Angeles
L'Homme and Y handle heat best of the masculines. Kouros and Opium are cold-weather, evening fragrances — in LA sun they become overwhelming quickly, and one spray is genuinely the correct dose. Libre works year-round; Black Opium and Le Parfum are better after dark.
Frequently asked questions
What is YSL's best-selling fragrance?
Black Opium for women and Y for men are the strongest modern sellers. Libre is close behind on the feminine side.
What is the difference between Black Opium and Black Opium Le Parfum?
Le Parfum is a higher concentration — deeper, sweeter and longer-lasting. The original Eau de Parfum is brighter and more coffee-forward.
Which size of Black Opium Le Parfum is better value?
The 3oz at around $198.56 works out to roughly $66 per ounce against about $83 per ounce for the 1.7oz. The larger bottle is the better buy if you already know it suits you.
Is Kouros worth buying?
If you are an experienced wearer curious about pre-1990s masculine perfumery, yes — it is a genuine landmark. If you only wear modern fresh fragrances, sample before committing. It is one of the most divisive fragrances ever released.
Is Libre or Black Opium better?
Black Opium is sweeter and coffee-led; Libre is a lavender-orange blossom composition that reads cleaner and more versatile. Libre is the safer daily choice, Black Opium the more distinctive evening one.
Is Myslf refillable?
Yes. Myslf ships in a refillable bottle at around $140.65 for 3.4oz, which makes it cheaper to maintain long term if refills are available.
