Fragrance longevity is determined by a complex interplay of molecular volatility, skin chemistry, concentration, and environmental conditions. Understanding the science behind why some fragrances last all day while others fade within hours transforms how you evaluate and choose your next bottle.

Molecular Volatility

Every fragrance material evaporates at a different rate — this is the fundamental principle underlying the fragrance pyramid. Molecules with low molecular weight evaporate quickly (top notes); those with high molecular weight evaporate slowly (base notes). A fragrance's longevity is primarily determined by the proportion of high-molecular-weight base materials in its formula.

The Role of Fixatives

Fixatives are materials — natural or synthetic — that slow the evaporation of more volatile fragrance components. Musks, ambergris and its synthetic equivalents, benzoin, labdanum, and certain resins all function as fixatives. A formula with strong fixative anchors will outlast an identical composition without them by hours.

Skin Chemistry Interaction

Skin oils, pH, and moisture content all affect how fragrance molecules bind to and release from skin. Oily skin holds fragrance longer because the oils provide a binding medium. Dry skin absorbs and dissipates fragrance faster. Moisturising before application creates an artificial oil layer that extends longevity on any skin type.

Concentration Effects

Higher concentration means more fragrance material per unit of carrier — more molecules available for sustained evaporation. EDP lasts longer than EDT not merely because of concentration but because the lower alcohol content in EDP allows slower, more controlled evaporation of the fragrance materials.

Environmental Factors

Heat accelerates evaporation; humidity slows it. In Los Angeles's dry heat, fragrance evaporates faster than in humid climates — requiring either higher concentration, more conservative application, or acceptance of shorter wear times than you might experience with the same fragrance in a cooler environment.
