How to Care for Your Fragrance Bottles: Maintenance Guide
Fragrance bottles are both functional vessels and beautiful luxury objects. Caring for them correctly preserves the fragrance quality within and the aesthetic value of the bottle itself — important for collectors, investment holders, and anyone who takes pleasure in a well-maintained collection.
Cleaning Bottles
For display bottles, a soft, dry microfibre cloth removes dust without scratching. Avoid water on crystal or glass stoppers — water marks are difficult to remove and can leave mineral deposits. For bottles with spray mechanisms that have clogged, a brief spray of isopropyl alcohol (70%) through the nozzle typically clears the mechanism without damaging the fragrance.
Caring for Spray Mechanisms
Spray mechanisms can clog from dried fragrance residue if not used regularly. For bottles you use infrequently, test the spray every few weeks to keep the mechanism clear. For stuck mechanisms, careful disassembly and cleaning of the spray head with isopropyl alcohol is typically effective. Never force a stuck mechanism — this can crack the pump housing.
Crystal and Special Bottles
Crystal bottles — such as the Baccarat Rouge 540 crystal edition or Roja Parfums' crystal decanters — require extra care. Crystal is more fragile than standard glass and more susceptible to thermal shock. Never immerse in water; never place near heat sources; handle with clean, dry hands to avoid fingerprint oils etching the surface over time.
Storing Opened Bottles
Once opened, minimise oxygen exposure. Keep caps or stoppers in place when not in use. Store upright to prevent fragrance from degrading the cap's internal seals. Transfer to smaller atomisers when the bottle reaches the half-full point to reduce the headspace-to-liquid ratio and slow oxidation.
