Olfactory Notes 101: Understanding Perfume Layers
Understanding Fragrance Notes
Every fragrance is composed of three layers of scents that reveal themselves over time. Understanding these layers helps you choose fragrances you'll love.
Top Notes (Head Notes)
Top notes appear within seconds and last 5-15 minutes. Common examples: bergamot, lemon, grapefruit, black pepper, cinnamon, aldehydes. Light, fresh, and citrusyβthese make the first impression.
Heart Notes (Middle Notes)
Heart notes emerge as top notes fade and last 20 minutes to several hours. These form the fragrance's core: floral notes (rose, jasmine), fruits (peach, apple), spices (clove, cardamom), herbs (lavender, rosemary). This layer defines the fragrance's character.
Base Notes
Base notes appear after 30 minutes and last 6+ hours. They provide longevity and depth: musk, amber, cedarwood, sandalwood, vanilla, patchouli, oud. These anchor the fragrance.
Pro Tip: Understanding these three layers helps you shop smarter and find fragrances aligned with your preferences. Always let a fragrance develop for 15 minutes before deciding if you love it.
