How Fragrance Changes as a Bottle Ages: The Oxidation Effect

A fragrance left partially used develops over months and years through a process of gradual oxidation — the slow reaction of fragrance compounds with oxygen in the headspace above the liquid. This produces effects that range from interesting evolution to complete degradation, depending on the composition and storage conditions.

The Chemistry of Oxidation

Oxygen in the bottle's headspace reacts with fragrance molecules — particularly those containing double bonds, sulfur groups, and aldehyde structures. Some of these reactions produce pleasant new compounds (certain citrus molecules oxidise into pleasing deeper notes); others produce unpleasant results (some musks develop off-notes; certain floral compounds degrade into harsh or medicinal character).

When Aging Improves Fragrance

Some fragrance enthusiasts deliberately age bottles to develop richer character. Citrus and fresh fragrances can develop a pleasant mellowness as harsh top notes oxidise away. Certain classic orientals are reportedly more beautiful after five to ten years of careful aging. This is an advanced and somewhat unpredictable practice — worth noting but not a reliable strategy for most buyers.

When Aging Degrades Fragrance

Most fragrance quality degrades with improper storage. Fragrances stored in warm or light-exposed conditions oxidise fastest. The first sign of degradation is typically a change in the top note character — a sharper, more chemical, or more medicinal quality that wasn't present in the fresh bottle. If your bottle develops this character, the fragrance has likely been compromised.

Practical Prevention

Store in dark, cool, stable conditions. Minimise headspace by keeping bottles full or transferring to smaller atomisers when partially used. In Los Angeles homes, interior closets away from heat sources are the most practical optimal storage location.
