Fragrance Chemistry 101: Understanding Top, Heart, and Base Notes
The Three-Layer Structure
Every fragrance is composed of three distinct layers that reveal themselves over time. This pyramidal structure is why a fragrance smells different on your wrist after 5 minutes than it does after 5 hours.
Top Notes
Top notes are the initial scents you experience when you first spray a fragrance. They're bright, fresh, and immediately noticeable. These notes last between 5-15 minutes. Common top notes include citrus oils, fresh herbs, and spices.
Heart Notes
The heart notes are the true personality of a fragrance. They emerge as the top notes fade and last 30 minutes to several hours. Heart notes include florals like rose and jasmine, fruits, and woody elements.
Base Notes
Base notes are the foundationāthey emerge 30-60 minutes after and can linger for 6+ hours. These heavy compounds create lasting impressions. Base notes include amber, vanilla, musk, sandalwood, and patchouli.
